Really enjoyed this beautiful reflection on the magic of Venice through an examination of colour and art He quotes and comments and illustrates by using his evidently substantial fund of stories and venetian experiences His love of art and artists flows out across the page and his fondness for Venice and all the Islands of the Lagoon would, I think, have drawn me in very easily if it wasn t for the fact that I am already wholly sold on the adoration thing This i would have to confess is far less knowledgeable and articulate than his own but that is the joy of this book it feeds the desire to grasp the wonder of Venice and gives you the wherewithal to put some words to those feelings.

Bedside companion is spot on, because I bought it while I was visiting Venice and read a chapter or two from it, each night before falling off to sleep.I m a chromofile, so the fact that each chapter deals with a colour that the author associates with the corresponding aspects of Venice, makes it a delightful read for me I was surprised at how fast I was reading or devouring each page And it gave me a lot of insight on to things that I wouldn t have known about Venice, even with a tour guide

This book was a bit too impressionist and insubstantial for my taste like Turner s watercolour painting on the cover At the same time the author is quite opiniated.Still, it added to my store of knowledge of the Serenissima.
