Board BookThis book is one of a series of touchy feely books by Usborne designed for children ages 2 6 The text is repetitive and therefore predictable to the emerging reader Children love these books and they allow those new to reading to interact with each page in a verbal, visual and tactile way that s not my truck It s hubcaps are too rough feel the sandpaper That s not my truck Its mixer is too bumpy run your hand over the cement mixer It has the added advantage of being written in Spanish or English For those who are just being introduced to the joys of reading this series will be a great delight Winner of parents guide media award 2004

That s Not My Truck was one of the first books that my son Luke was able to really attend to at around age 2.5.Pairing sensory play with books is an ideal way to develop an interest in books for all kids, not just autistic children, which is why there are so many sensory toddler board books But I like the quality of the That s Not My series better than most.First, there s a focus on sensory language Starting with the cover, each turn of the page reveals a new texture and a word describing it For That s Not My Truck we discover bumpy, shiny, rough, lumpy, and ridgy and for That s Not My Tractor we have bumpy, rough, smooth, squashy, scratchy, and shiny You may be surprised at how quickly a language delayed child can pick up soft at least receptively , if given a tactile, structured way to repeatedly access its meaning. The series also builds vocabulary by introducing the words for types of the main subject or parts of its whole When you read, That s not my tractor It s trailer is too rough, the tactile element sandpaper covers the trailer and nothing else, which really reinforces the new vocabulary word in a multi sensory way The visuals are also extremely well done Cartoon images are simply drawn against solid backgrounds.Usborne s That s Not My books use very few words in a repetitive format, and that format is exactly the same throughout the expansive series Durable and adorable, these are must haves for sensory seeking little ones who need a nudge towards books I review books for children from the perspective of a parent of kids with autism The review above is part of a longer post on books for kids who really love trucks

This was the first book out of the box that my son dove for He loves cars, which is why we got this as one of the board books specifically for him He also has enjoyed his other books from the That s Not My series Not much of a surprise that he spent a good hour flipping through the pages, checking the different textures, and shoving the book back at me to read for him I expect this one to stay in his read pile for awhile.

Read with my baby at 9 10 months Judging from her reaction, I think this book is too sophisticated for her She didn t naturally reach out and tried to feel the different textures even with encouragement demonstration She has another touchy feely book and she was attracted to certain pages and wanted to explore the textures on the pages so I don t think age is the only factor.3 stars.

This touch and feel book is a FAVORITE of Joe s He carries it around with him We ve gotten other That s Not My books from the library before, but they didn t have this effect on him Maybe he was too young and just now gets it Or maybe he REALLY likes trucks Doesn t matter I m just tickled to see him so attached to a book

That s my truck It s tipper is so ridgey. My husband and I found this little book in the British Heart Foundation shop in Oxford, another interesting addition to the beloved That s Not My series This is the first we have read which was centred around animals, providing an interesting and different set of textures, but without the effortless cuteness of Rachel Wells animal drawings. It was interesting to see the characteristic textures of this series applied to a vehicle, something I would naturally associate with cold smooth textures Although some textures might have been predictable, too squishy shiny tank bumpy mixer , others were very interesting and unlike anything else I have seen in the animal editions I particularly liked the tough hubcaps and lumpy radiator , which were very satisfying to stroke and pleasantly shiny I would love to hear how tactile learner children rate the different books in this series.Although I can t get as involved about a truck as I do with pandas and unicorns, it s a very different book showing that this series has almost endless scope.

My little girl adored it, especially the cover squashy She would not let it go after bedtime s story hour I like that the textures are a little different than most of the collection since it s an object and not an animal But most of the stars are still thanks to her exuberant reaction.

This book is a good sensory experience, one that might be especially suited to tiny boys who like trucks Even before a little one learns to read or even listen closely, he will be able to enjoy touching the differing surfaces of the toy truck pictures and gain an early appreciation for books.

Nice bright, colourful book with one texture per page allowing the reader to touch something coresponding with the text.
